PPG & Altair: Nano Metallic Paint Alternative to Aircraft Coatings

SYLMAR, California, USA, PPG's Industrial Aeronautical Materials Division and Altair Nanotech have reached a technology cooperation program. Both parties will unite scientific and technological forces to commercialize environmentally friendly nanoparticle coatings to replace the chromate topcoat currently used in aerospace vehicles. The new nano-coating will provide the spacecraft with higher quality heat and corrosion resistance, and will adopt an aqueous, high-solids formulation. At present, the two teams did not publish the research progress. However, SpecialChem understands that both parties will mainly focus on the dispersion technology of nano-metal oxides. The project was initially designed for three years. PPG and Altair strived to complete commercialization of the results in five years. It is reported that the first batch of the project The results will come out in 2008.

Altair nanotechnology company nanotechnology oxide dispersion technology, with PPG high performance coating resin, believe that in the future will replace the chromate topcoat. Paul Bowman, president of PPG Aerospace Global Business, is confident of the cooperation between the two parties.

“The initial product plan for this project includes not only the aircraft surface coatings but also the development of aircraft interior coating products. The new interior coating will enable passengers to create a safe and quiet seating space, eliminating the use of chromates. It also eliminates sources of pollution at the source,” Bowman said. “The new coating products must first be able to surpass the traditional chromate products in terms of performance and quality, while the waterborne coating formulations will ensure the environmental protection of the coatings.”

Altair CEO Dr.OAOAlanGotcher is also full of confidence in the cooperation between the two parties: “We are very honored to work with PPG, the world's largest aircraft coating supplier, to jointly develop a new generation of nano-coating products. We believe that through PPG's years of service experience in aircraft coating products, With Altair's nanotechnology, our cooperation will provide more aircraft manufacturing companies and airlines with more high-quality, environmentally friendly coating technology solutions."
