3D printing complex metal mesh structure for concrete components

Gramazio Kohler from Zurich, Switzerland, is a research project focused on the use of additive digital manufacturing technology to create non-standard building components. They mainly analyze the experiments and experiments to study the changes in building production requirements after the introduction of digital manufacturing technology. The research project is divided into two phases. The first phase focuses on developing a 3D robotic extrusion process and examining the interdependence between the mesh type and the rheological behavior of the concrete.

The second phase of the project was carried out at the National Centre for Research Competence (NCCR) in Switzerland, centered on digital manufacturing – how to transform a structurally weak polymer extrusion process into a fully load-bearing capacity (metal ) Building system. According to the researchers, the second phase of research and development is expected to continue until 2018.

The project team is currently in the second phase, unlike the first phase of the main use of polymer materials, they are trying to develop an automatic bending and welding system that can be manufactured with 3 mm steel wire mesh structure. The study involved the development of a manufacturing technology and a grid type that clarified structural information, and in collaboration with Professor Jonas Buchli of the Agile & Dexterous Robotics Lab, collaborated to develop a specialized Robot end effector.

The Zurich Federal Institute of Technology is the research partner of the project, and the industry partner is the famous Swiss building material manufacturer Sika Technology.
