The latest technology: "total internal reflection" makes 3D printed parts emit jewel-like luster

Recently, Otto Souta, an inventor from London and an industrial designer, discovered a new technology. The combination of physics and special geometry can give ordinary 3D printed parts a jewel-like luster.

Otto Souta began researching 3D printing four years ago and has been experimenting with new 3D printing components using 3D printing technology and materials. While researching his own 3D printers and 3D printing solutions, he inadvertently discovered that combining physics with unique geometries can produce 3D printed parts with different gloss, like gems.

Previously, Otto Souta spent a lot of time learning how 3D printing works and developed his own 3D printer, and he hopes to improve the standards of conventional industrial design. It is understood that he is currently developing a fourth version of his DIY 3D printer and intends to promote it to the market.

His 3D printer includes the following features:

·Heating bed

·All metal extrusion system

·Building size 250×250×250 mm

Speaking of it, Otto Souta was the first to study 3D printing, and with his years of design experience, he improved 3D printing equipment and methods. In testing different 3D printing processes, he discovered the application of physical phenomena - total internal emission (TIR) to make 3D printed parts sparkle.

Total internal reflection (TIR) is actually the use of materials to refract and reflect dense light, thereby making the part itself sparkle. This has been widely used in the design of clothing accessories. To prove that the physical program can function in the 3D printing process, Souta designed a series of plastic letters and straps to test.

Thanks to the special geometry that these components contain thousands of refractive and reflective surfaces, they can multiply the light emitted by ordinary plastics, making these 3D printed parts shine like gems.

According to Souta, the technology can be used in large and complex clothing jewellery designs, and all things made with this technology are extremely light due to internal reflection. More importantly, the gloss reflected from the interior is very long-lasting. Unlike traditional hand-polished or electroplated objects, the surface gloss will fade over time.

And this technology is compatible with almost all wires on the market, including rigid and flexible materials. But Souta feels that the combination of this technology and transparent and translucent colored filaments can achieve the best results.
