3D printing greatly improves the success rate of traumatic orthopedic surgery

Professor Song Zhe of the Department of Traumatology and Orthopaedics, Xi'an Honghui Hospital reported on the application value of 3D printed model in traumatic orthopedic patients at the 17th Osteopathic Conference of the Chinese Medical Association and the 10th COA International Academic Conference (COA2015). . According to the report, 3D printing technology can clarify preoperative diagnosis, fracture type, degree of fracture displacement and fracture block size for comminuted metaphyseal, intra-articular, old-fashioned and anatomical complex orthopedic patients. Satisfactory reduction and good fixation have greatly improved the success rate of traumatic orthopedic surgery.

Professor Song Zhe's study aimed to investigate the feasibility and clinical significance of 3D printing technology for preoperative diagnosis, preoperative planning, preoperative, intraoperative and postoperative evaluation of traumatic orthopedic surgery.

From December 2013 to June 2015, 116 patients with traumatic orthopedic fractures were printed in 3D models, including 68 males and 48 females, with an average of 38.6 years. Fractures were classified according to location: proximal humeral fractures, 23 cases; elbow fracture and dislocation, 11 cases; pelvic and acetabular fractures, 36 cases; tibial plateau fractures, 22 cases; distal radius fractures, 24 cases. Spiral CT scan was performed on each fracture patient before operation, DICOM data was input, Mimics software data processing was used, 3D printing technology was used to print the fracture model, the 3D model was carefully evaluated, the surgical plan was developed, and the surgical procedure was simulated before internal fixation. Surgery is performed and postoperative evaluation can be performed.

The results showed that the preoperative diagnosis of 116 fracture patients was consistent with the intraoperative findings. The intraoperative surgical plan was completely based on the preoperative planned internal fixation method. The fixed plate, screw number and screw length used during the operation were compared with those before surgery. The plan is basically the same. All patients showed satisfactory fracture reduction after X-ray and CT, and the internal fixation was reliable and the position was good.

Therefore, Professor Song Zhe believes that 3D printing technology can clarify the preoperative diagnosis, the type of fracture, the degree of fracture displacement and the size of the fracture block for the comminuted metaphyseal, intra-articular, old-fashioned and anatomical complex traumatic orthopedics. Satisfactory reduction and good fixation of the middle fracture greatly improved the success rate of traumatic orthopedic surgery.
