Introduce the color management setting methods of several types of prepress software

There are many applications that support color management. I only choose a few of the most popular software, and these softwares are very closely related to each other --- Adobe PageMaker, Adobe Photoshop, and Adobe Illustrator. The author tries to explain briefly how to use these Set color management options in the software.

Pagemaker 6.5c CMS settings
After opening Pagemaker, first "File-Preferences-General ...", and then select "CMS Settings ..." in the pop-up window, and then pop up the window will display (pictured) "Color Management System Preferences" . Here, you can set the equipment involved in the process of publishing or printing documents. If no other color management software is installed, you can only select ColorSync or Kodak ICC (pictured).

The options are explained below:

A If you decide to use color management, you must select "Open"

B There are three options --- "None", "Compound Printer" and "Color Separation Printer". Selecting one of the two can make the screen simulate the color of the printer.

C. You can choose "None" or one of the color management centers to let PAGEMAKER automatically set the device description file of the image.

D can only choose one of the color management centers, which can be different from C.

E Select this output device must belong to Postscript Level2, and hope this device uses its color drawing dictionary. (Color rendering Dictionary) for color management.

F If you want to send the PageMaker file to another computer for output, you can select this item to ensure that the file contains profile control color.

G Select the correct screen description file to display the correct color.

H Select a device description file that describes the color capabilities of the printer.

I Select the device description file of the image source, such as the description file describing the digital camera or scanner, or you can select the screen description file as the source image color.

J Provide information about the selected device description file. PageMaker's installer provides a description file of the most commonly used devices for users to choose. It is impossible to provide description files of all devices because there are too many products. If PageMaker does not include the device description file you use, there are two solutions. One is to use a tool that can generate a description. The second is to download or contact the manufacturer on the manufacturer's web page to obtain the required description file. Before you start to create a PageMaker document, you should first set all the options in the CMS preferences appropriately. Do not set the profile and other options indiscriminately, otherwise it will not be possible to obtain the desired results.

Photoshop 5.0 CMS settings
Photoshop5 can directly support color management (4.0 can also support CMS indirectly using PLUGINS).

The following is a simple setting method provided by Apple Computer, first select "file> color settings" on the menu, and then ...

(1) RGB setting ----- The predetermined value is "SRGB", this option is suitable for images displayed on the screen or webpage, but not suitable for color printing and publishing. And "ColorMatch RGB" or "Apple RGB" can be used as the color of printing and publishing. The screen contrast "Gamma", whiteness "White Point" and screen primary colors (Primaries) automatically change according to the "RGB" setting. Select "Display using monitor compensation" to make Photoshop colors and screen colors interactively change in real time.

(2) CMYK settings-Photoshop's default color separation method (from RGB to CMYK color) is to use its Photoshop color separation table, and those with experience can modify the color separation table to obtain better results. Professionals can choose "ICC" to get the highest quality. If you select "ICC", you must also select the appropriate output device profile (Profile), color management center (Engine) and color translation preferences (Intent). Unless the hardware and software allow the user to accurately set the screen black point (Black Point), otherwise do not select this option.

(3) Gray scale setting ---- "RGB" or "Black Ink" can be selected. The former is suitable for displaying gray images in web pages, and the latter is for printing.
