What is green printing and green packaging?

Green printing

In the 1980s, European and American countries pioneered the concept of green printing. At present, green printing is guiding and promoting the development of global printing in a healthy and orderly direction with its powerful influence. In foreign countries, not only increases the requirements for waste disposal, but also provides a way to reduce ink consumption. For example, as early as June 2000, the UK banned the printing of food packaging films with solvent-based inks. It is understood that 60% of prints in the UK are printed with non-alcoholic or less-alcohol inks. The US Environmental Protection Agency strongly opposes the use of solvent-based inks. Flexographic water-based inks are currently the only non-toxic inks approved by the US Food and Drug Association, and are widely used in food and pharmaceutical packaging printing.

In many countries, the people are also very concerned about the impact of commodities on health and the environment. For example, a recent survey in France showed that 95% of French people want to understand the potential health and environmental hazards of purchased goods, and hope that the government will increase the safety of commodities. Transparency laws. 83% of French people surveyed believe that today ’s children face more product safety threats than their parents, especially today ’s products contain more substances that have potential threats to human health than certain products in the past, such as certain chemical substances Wait. In recent years, as people's awareness of environmental protection has increased, the environmentally friendly green flexo printing method is more worthy of our expectations!

It is understood that the impact of printed products on environmental protection is strictly limited internationally in two aspects: the residual content of solvents is not allowed to exist or exceed the standard. The solvents here mainly refer to benzene, esters, ketones, etc .; heavy metals such as lead, chromium, The content of copper and mercury must comply with European regulations 94/62 / EC, and its concentration cannot exceed 100 PPM (cumulative). The above two restrictions are for harmful substances in the ink.

The ink used in flexographic printing has its unique advantages. Now there are three major categories of flexographic printing inks: water-based inks; alcohol solvent inks; UV inks. In particular, water-based inks do not contain solvents, so there is no residual content of solvents, which is an internationally recognized environmentally friendly ink. At present, it has been widely used in some countries. The alcohol solvent contamination in methanol-free alcohol solvent inks is much smaller than benzene, esters, and ketones, and trace amounts of alcohol will not affect human health.

Most of the foreign plastic film prints we have seen use flexographic printing and use alcohol solvent inks, which are also environmentally friendly inks. UV inks also contain no solvents and will not cause pollution to the environment after UV drying. Since UV ink itself has no solvent and is dried by ultraviolet rays, printed products using UV ink are also environmentally friendly.

The advantages (types and properties) of ink used in flexographic printing are unmatched by other printing methods such as offset printing and gravure printing.

The water-based ink has been recognized as a non-toxic ink by the American Food and Drug Association. The safety of UV ink is also recognized by the US Environmental Protection Agency.

Green packaging

The so-called "green packaging" refers to packaging that does not cause pollution to the ecological environment, does not cause harm to human health, can be recycled and recycled, and can promote sustainable development.

In other words, the whole process of packaging products from raw material selection, product production, use and disposal should meet the requirements of ecological environment protection. It includes saving resources, energy, avoiding large amounts of waste, easy to recycle and recycle (resource-saving), or incineration, degradable and other ecological environmental protection requirements, that is, it meets the "3R + 1D" (Reduce reduction) Principle of Reuse, Reuse, Recycle and Degrable). At present, the tendency of "excessive packaging" in some product packaging in China is contrary to the "3R + 1D" principle. Therefore, it is of great practical significance to vigorously develop green packaging and do a good job in packaging reduction, waste disposal and resource recycling.

In the understanding of green packaging, there is currently a misunderstanding that packaging waste is easy to handle, or made from degradable materials is "green packaging"; there is a general view that all paper packaging is "green" This understanding is not comprehensive. The "3R + 1D" principle of developing green packaging recognized in the world today is to implement packaging reduction. Packaging should meet the protection, convenience, sales and other functions, the amount should be the least; packaging should be easy to reuse ( Reuse), or easy to recycle (Recycle), through the production of recycled products, incineration using heat, compost treatment to improve soil function, etc., to achieve the purpose of reuse; packaging waste can be degraded (Degradable), without forming permanent garbage, and then achieve The purpose of improving the soil; packaging materials should be non-toxic and harmless to humans and organisms. Packaging materials should not contain toxic elements (such as halogens, heavy metals), or the content should be controlled below the relevant standards. Another point is that the whole process of packaging products from raw material collection, material processing, manufacturing products, product use, waste recycling and recycling, until the final disposal, should not cause pollution to the human body and the environment. This is the highest requirement for green packaging based on the life cycle analysis method and a system engineering perspective.

Due to the limited forest resources in China, the pollution problem caused by papermaking is difficult to solve in a short period of time. If paper is used to replace plastic packaging, it is neither realistic nor environmentally friendly. A comprehensive ban on plastic packaging will cause greater pollution.
