The new project will focus on the development of new functional inks, printing processes, and electronic circuits. Its applications will include pharmaceutical packaging that can track the history of medication, electronic labels that inform customers when food has deteriorated, etc.

Richford said the new project and alliance is committed to making Canada a global leader in printable electronics. The Canadian government will work closely with multiple industry partners, including academia and industry, to support the development of ultra-thin, flexible, and inexpensive electronic products.

NRC will invest $ 40 million in "printable electronics" projects over the next five years to develop cutting-edge technologies and lighter electronic devices for building a smart society. Such as smart labels that can reduce transportation costs, smart drug packaging for improving healthcare services, new anti-counterfeiting measures to enhance bank coin security, and printable radio frequency identification antennas.

Printable electronic technology will set off a revolution in manufacturing high-volume, interactive consumer products and revolutionize the world we live in at every level.

The newly established industrial alliance will also inject CAD 16 million in funds over the next five years to concentrate resources from Canadian companies and research centers, provide strategic research and development, technical services, and test design and manufacturing technologies. This will help industrial customers bridge the technology gap when developing new products and provide a powerful technology platform for the design of other innovative products.
