Highly uniform paper with VortigenTM system

The VortigenTM system is a new technology developed by the American Institute of Paper Science and Technology. Recently, the technology has achieved satisfactory results in a production scale operation in a factory in South Carolina. Using this technology, it is possible to produce papers with high strength, good uniformity and excellent surface strength, as well as to save raw materials and energy, which means that this technology can drastically reduce the production costs of papermaking companies.
The new technology has transformed the forming section of the paper machine to improve the performance of the paper by changing the flow pattern of the fiber suspension during molding. The improvement of forming fluid mechanics can make the fibers flocculate evenly and make the fibers have a certain directional arrangement. The network structure formed by the combination of the fibers of the paper sheet, under the effect of stress, the paper sheet will be destroyed at the weakest joint and direction. The better the sheet formation, the higher the strength properties and the surface properties.
According to the inventor of the technology, the hydrodynamic forces during the forming process tend to align the fibers in the direction of fluid flow, ie, in the same direction as the running direction of the paper machine. By changing the properties of the fluid, it is possible to evenly distribute the fibers and control the orientation of the fibers. This will improve the distribution of the fibers and the isotropy of the fiber arrangement, resulting in a high-strength sheet with minimal fiber usage. To develop this technology, one must first understand the physical properties of fiber dispersion in the forming section. Relatively few changes to the forming device can significantly alter the fluid's performance and thus evenly disperse the fibers. The VortigenTM system is currently the only practical paper technology that can be used for industrial production of uniform distribution of two-dimensional directional fibers. Recent preliminary experimental results show that the system can obtain paper sheets with the same strength index while reducing the fiber usage by 10% to 20%, and the sheet has good uniformity and good surface properties.
Reducing the amount of fiber used means saving a lot of energy. The energy in the papermaking process is mainly consumed by pulping, beating, slurry pumping, and final product acquisition. In addition to saving energy, a reduction of 5% in paper quantification can save about US$3 million in pulp costs for a 30t/a liner board surface.
It is said that this technology is one of the most advanced technologies in the paper industry in the past 25 years. The system can now provide mature technologies to the pulp and paper industry, and can recover costs in as short as 3 months. The next step in the development of this technology is to install sensors matched to the VortigenTM system on the paper machine so that the paper machine can be controlled in real time.
