The nightshade family includes many important vegetable crops, which often suffer from salt stress. MicroRNA (miRNA) has been found to participate in the regulation of plant gene expression in response to salt stress. However, there have been few reports that miRNA plant miRNAs are involved in such responses. The research team led by Associate Researcher Zhuang Yong of the Vegetable Research Institute of Jiangsu Academy of Agricultural Sciences conducted an in-depth analysis of this using small RNA sequencing technology *, and the research results were published in the recent International Journal of Molecular Sciences.
To identify miRNAs that responded to salt stress, the researchers first constructed two small RNA libraries from the roots of NaCl-treated and NaCl-untreated salt-tolerant varieties-Solanum linnaeanum, and performed high-throughput sequencing analysis jobs). Sequencing identified 98 conserved miRNAs from 37 families, some of which have been verified by quantitative PCR. Under salt stress, 11 miRNAs were down-regulated, and 3 miRNAs were up-regulated. The researchers then predicted the target genes of these miRNAs in response to salt stress and found that they were involved in the cellular processes in various plants. This research provides valuable information for the functional study of miRNA in S. linnaeanum and helps to develop genetic improvement strategies for Solanaceae crops.
