Chinese scientists "speed up" 6000 times for spectrometer

Turning a "mirror" on a traditional spectrometer into 10 surfaces increases the efficiency by 6000 times. The "two-dimensional CCD array detector" spectrometer developed by Fudan University can draw the original spectrogram in 10 minutes. Spectrometer is a basic scientific instrument used to "take photos" of light. It can analyze the important characteristics of light wave energy, wavelength, bandwidth, line type, etc. in scientific research fields and industries such as remote sensing, biomedicine, national defense, and optoelectronic functional materials. The world has extensive and important applications. However, China mainly relies on imports in this high-end scientific instrument field.

At present, the mainstream spectral analysis instrument in the infrared to ultraviolet spectrum region is a grating scanning spectrometer, in which the "grating" is a "soul component", and its appearance is similar to a mirror surface, acting like a "sieve", which can sort out and reflect photons of different wavelengths Go to the detector, and then go through the data processing, so as to realize the measurement and analysis of the spectrum. Traditional spectrometers usually use a mechanical rotating device to continuously rotate the grating, and each time the grating rotates, it "passes" light of one wavelength. Since a beam of light includes multiple wavelengths, the grating needs to be rotated multiple times to allow all the light to pass through, which is time-consuming. There is also a "one-dimensional CCD array detector" spectrometer. Although the spectrum can be measured without rotating the grating, each measurement can only cover a limited range of the spectral region. To achieve wide-spectrum measurement, the grating still needs to be rotated.

How to achieve wide-spectrum measurement and fast measurement at the same time? The "two-dimensional CCD array detector" spectrometer has done it, the secret lies in its unique grating structure. The research team led by Chen Liangyao, Dean of School of Information Science and Engineering, Fudan University, after careful calculation and experimentation, “bundled” 10 gratings in parallel to become an “integrated grating”, just like 10 “mirrors” each responsible Photons of different wavelengths are sorted out and reflected on the detector at the same time. This light "catcher" can fundamentally get rid of mechanical rotation, obtain high-resolution spectrograms in the full spectral range of 200 to 1000 nanometers, and the efficiency has increased from the original 10 minutes to 0.1 seconds.

This research achievement has won the national invention patent. After the relevant research results were published in the international well-known optical journal "Optical Express", it was highly evaluated by international peers and considered to be an "original important contribution" to spectroscopy research.
