German scientists use bionics to reduce production costs of lithium-ion batteries

The electrodes inside modern batteries are porous like sponges. Unlike household sponges, the pore size is in the micrometer scale. Therefore, the battery has a large surface layer, which provides space for the chemical process of charging and discharging. Just to optimize the function, all electrode holes must be filled with electrolyte. The liquid electrolyte is the transmission medium, and charged ions flow between the positive and negative electrodes in the battery depending on it. Without electrolyte, there is no load balancing in the battery and no current flows outside. However, all high-energy batteries currently used in the automotive industry have poor electrolyte wettability on the electrode surface. In order to make the electrolyte penetrate into all pores as much as possible in order to maximize the performance of the battery, battery manufacturers have so far spent a lot of time and cost: the use of expensive and time-consuming vacuum and cryopreservation processes to force liquid into the electrode material.

The use of newly developed processes can greatly reduce production time, from hours to minutes. In order to achieve this amazing effect, German scientists imitated natural phenomena to a certain extent, using mechanical and chemical technology to transform the electrode so that it can absorb electrolyte as effectively as the tree absorbs water, so that the electrolyte can quickly fill the entire surface, even Can significantly improve the performance of related batteries. Scientists have achieved the R & D goal of greatly shortening the production time of lithium ion battery perfusion electrolyte and reducing production costs through innovative transformation of the electrodes.

The KIT-scientific research team that successfully developed this technology consists of physicists, chemists, material scientists and process engineers. The new technology has been declared a patent, and it is said that a number of well-known enterprises intend to sign a license agreement.
